Ocean Attractions in Basque Country

CIBOURE – SAINT JEAN DE LUZ

In this seaside resort, you can stroll along the coast from the port all the way to the Sainte Barbe hill and admire a view of the bay.

You can visit the homes of Louis XIV and the Infanta of Spain, or simply stroll through the old pedestrian streets to the place Louis XIV, a public square by the harbour with a lively atmosphere.

Ciboure is just on the other side of the Nivelle river, which marks a natural divide in the landscape. It also has a marina and fishing harbour. At the end of the bay, in the village of Socoa, is the birthplace of composer Maurice Ravel. Socoa is located between Ciboure and Urrugne. It’s known for its 17th century fortifications as well as its restaurants and aquatic activities.

BIARRITZ

A popular surfing town, Biarritz has exceptional ocean views from the great beach in Ilbarritz through the Old Harbour. You can visit the City of the Ocean museum or the Asiatica museum of Oriental art.

SAN SEBASTIAN

This is the first big town on the Spanish coast, giving onto the ocean with Monte Igueldo in the distance.

You can get there conveniently with the Eusko Tren / Topo (Basque Country trainline departing from Hendaye) and while you’re there, visit the science museum, the old town or the aquarium. Gourmets and food lovers must try the local tapas with refreshing aperitifs.
