Sare

Ranked among the most beautiful in France, this village of 2,500 inhabitants is located on the Rhune mountain (905m altitude) just moments away from the Spanish border.

It’s a wonderful place to visit and enjoy the sights, with plenty of local businesses where you can refresh your supply of bread, magazines, tobacco products, groceries and so on.

The lovely church, chapels and medieval streets are well worth a visit. And you mustn’t leave Sare until you see the legendary and unforgettable Rhune mountain peak – it’s famous for a reason. Get there by foot or by mountain trolley for a breathtaking view of the coast, from San Sebastian on the Spanish side of the border to Capbreton in Landes, taking in the French and Spanish Pyrenees along the way. In Sare you can also discover our local breed of pony, the “pottok,” as well as the wild mountain vultures.

Sare offers a wide choice of activities for all ages:

  • Prehistoric caves with light and sound shows
  • The village with its beautiful Labourdine houses
  • Medieval streets
  • Ortillopitz House, a Basque home from the 17th c
  • Etxola Animal Park
  • The basque cake museum
  • Cheese dairies

Lastly, the Sare mountains have lots of activities for athletic types.

There’s something for everyone, whether you love mountain biking, horseback riding or walking.
