Campsite near Bayonne: a city of art and history
Just forty kilometers away, Bayonne is a must for heritage lovers. A city of traditions, it combines historic architecture, renowned gastronomy (Bayonne ham, chocolate) and popular festivals. The cathedral, the quays of the River Nive, Les Halles, the Basque Museum and the Chocolate Museum are all good places to explore the urban version of the Basque Country.
Meeting the Spanish Basque Country
Etxalar, Zugarramurdi and Urdax are not far from us and offer a different kind of architecture. They can also be reached on foot via small signposted paths.
Discover Fontarrabie
Fontarrabie is a small fishing village on the other side of the Bidasoa River from Hendaye in Spain.
You can get there by car via Irun or by boat (much more pleasant) from the port of Hendaye.
You can visit the fishing port or wander through the narrow streets, where a large number of small bars offer a variety of “pintxos” or “tapas”, small portions of omelette, calamari, mussels… to accompany your aperitif.
The ventas
The Basque Country is also well known for its “ventas” , meaning border trade. They are located on the Spanish border. In the commune of Sare, only one remains, the “venta Berrouet”. Further afield are Dantcharia, Ibardin, Arneguy and Valcarlos.
These shops sell everything from clothing and perfume to meat, but are best known for their duty-free sales of alcohol and cigarettes.
San Sebastien
The first major town on the Spanish coast, it opens out onto the sea, with Monte Igueldo in the distance, and you can get there by topo or euskaltren (train from Hendaye station) for convenience, to visit the science museum, the old town, theaquarium, and not forgetting, for gourmets, the famous tapas to accompany the aperitif.
